The Office of Compliance (OOC) released its 2017 Notification of Rights to legislative branch employees, as required by the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA). These rights consist of 13 workplace laws including civil rights, family and medical leave provisions, and safety and health protections.
“Although legislative branch employees are at-will employees, the Congressional Accountability Act assures important rights are protected,” said OOC Executive Director Susan Tsui Grundmann. “All legislative branch employees should know their rights. Knowledge of the law is both power and prevention.”
The rights applied to legislative branch employees, under the CAA include:
- Protection from Unlawful Discrimination
- Family and Medical Leave Act
- Fair Labor Standards
- Polygraph Testing Prohibition
- Notification of Office Closings & Mass Layoffs
- Uniformed Services Rights & Protections
- Protection for Exercising Workplace Rights
- Accessibility
- Hazard-free Workspaces
- Collective Bargaining & Unionization
- Collective Bargaining & Unionization
- Veterans’ Employment Opportunities
To assert rights under the CAA, legislative branch employees must file a claim within 180 days of an alleged violation. All contacts with the office are strictly confidential.
The annual posting is emailed to each legislative branch employee covered under the CAA and posted on the Office of Compliance website www.compliance.gov.
